For our very first cruise in July 2006 we selected a Mediterranean cruise on Celebrity Millennium. With this being our first cruise, it was also our first experience on any cruise ship, so we had no true frame of reference as we travelled around the Mediterranean. We’ll call it Celebrity Millennium here - the name the ship has been since 2008 when Celebrity Cruises rebranded all of their ships with the introduction of the Solstice class ships. At the time of our Mediterranean cruise the ship was named Millennium when it was the flag ship of the Celebrity Cruises fleet until Celebrity Solstice arrived to take that honour.
Celebrity Millennium is a big ship (with a capacity of 1975 passengers at the time of our sailing) - but it did not seem overly big or crowded. Our overall impressions of the ship was good - it certainly had enough good facilities, services and choices to suit our taste. We had a good sized room with a nice balcony - no concern about the amount of space we had in our room. The ship was launched in 2000 and was starting to show signs of its age - there were some elements in our room that we would have thought should have been replaced prior to our voyage on it. It did undergo a major renovation in 2012 where it was “solsticized” to bring it some of the design elements of the newest Solstice class ships. The passenger capacity was increased to 2138 at that renovation.
Something we really did enjoy on Celebrity Millennium was our dinner at its specialty restaurant RMS Olympic. The restaurant was named for the transatlantic passenger ship launched in 1911 - the sister ship of the ill-fated RMS Titanic. A nice touch in the restaurant was wood paneling on the walls that actually came from the historic ship. One of the RMS Olympic’s brass bells was also on display at the restaurant entrance. The experience at RMS Olympic was special indeed.
We had a wonderful voyage on Celebrity Millennium and have very fond memories of our first cruise.
